Industry Optimistic that the Crisis is over as The Austrian hotel industry grows again

Salzburg/Austria, October 26th, 2011

Horwath HTL Austria, a member of Horwath HTL, the world’s largest hotel consulting network, partnered with the TREUGAST Solution Group again to rank the performance of the leading hotel groups in Austria in the 5th Annual Investment Ranking Austria 2011.

The results indicate that hotel industry has mostly recovered from the financial and economical crises in the years 2008 and 2009 and several companies have opened new hotels with more in the pipeline. Not surprisingly, most of the new supply is in Vienna and Salzburg.

Between 2009 and 2010 the overnight stays grew between 4.6 and 13.4% in the provincial capital cities with only one city, Linz, posting a fall -6,2% compared to 2009, when it was announced as the European Capital of Culture.

In 2010 there was a clear difference between the 4 and 5 star hotels that posted increased overnight stays, compared to the budget 2 and 1 star hotels (see the charts on the Vienna market below)) although this has less to do with demand levels falling and more to an increase in room supply which the market is expected to absorb over time. In 2011 Austria welcomed a good number of newcomers to its hospitality market. Some spectacular hotel openings were celebrated by international as well as national hotel groups like Fleming’s Hotel Deluxe Vienna City, Sofitel Vienna by Accor, Ramada Hotel & Suites Vienna, Motel One Salzburg, Meininger City Hotel in Salzburg und 25 Hours in Vienna.

According to the Salzburg City Hotel Survey, which has been organized by Horwath HTL Austria for the last 10 years, post crisis RevPAR has grown to almost the level of 2006,  Mozart celebration year.

Dr. Ploberger said “The return of occupancy growth in the Austrian market will come as a relied to the industry after three hard years caused by the Global Financial Crisis, the effects of which continue to be felt across Europe. Supply growth in the budget sector has meant there will be a period of sluggish growth as demand catches up to supply, but the growth is at a sustainable level. The only note of caution is the possible effect that the number of new bedrooms that are being added to the high end of the Vienna market might have. We remain positive for the rest of the year and cautiously optimist that this trend will continue into 2012”
